The City maintains the City's sewer lines by using best management practices and the latest technology to maintain optimal conditions of the wastewater system for the benefit of the community.

The Public Works Department responds to calls from residents or businesses that report sewer overflows that occur on City streets or are experiencing sewer backups on their property.  Sewer overflows are a threat to public health and the environment so incidents must be reported immediately.

The Department encourages you to maintain your sewer lateral connections to avoid sewer backups on your property or cause a sewer overflow onto the streets.  The Department recommends that you use a licensed plumber who can video inspect and thoroughly clean your lateral line to prevent sewer backups and overflows.  If you need more detailed information on how to maintain your lateral, please call Public Works Customer Service or email AskPW@beverlyhills.org.

To help maintain the sewer system and avoid causing a sewer overflow, please do not dispose the following items down the drain:

  • Hazardous waste
  • Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG)
  • Cement and soils
  • Paper and paper towels
  • Garbage foods
  • Solids (i.e. feminine products, diapers, cloth materials, excess pharmaceutical products)

If you have any questions on what is allowed to be discharged in the sewer system, please call Public Works Customer Service at (310) 285-2467 or email AskPW@beverlyhills.org.

The City’s sewage is treated at the Hyperion Treatment Plant owned by the City of Los Angeles. The City’s sewage is used to produce high quality recycled water for non-potable uses that meets state and federal standards. To ensure that wastewater discharges is treated properly, the City contracts with the County of Los Angeles to administer the Industrial Waste Program. The program makes sure that industrial and commercial discharges meet state and federal standards to protect the integrity of the overall sewer system and the Hyperion Treatment Plant.
